Our bodies were intended to move. We sit in cars or on trains on the way to and from work; we sit at desks for 8-9 hours a day, come home to sit at a dinner table and then on to the couch for a solid 1-2 hours of TV. No wonder if we make it to 90, we appear crouched; folded over as if sitting in a chair.
And speaking of sitting…a doctor friend recently told me that they’d replaced all the chairs in the hospital where she worked because the staff’s asses didn’t fit in them any more. SERIOUSLY?! The HOSPITAL, a place where health is presumably restored, is making obesity MORE comfortable and PAYING for it!
So GET OFF your rump and start moving. Do jumping jacks during commercials or have a dance party in your living room. Take the stairs. Park you car as far as possible from the store. Or better yet, WALK to the store.
Add movement to your day.
Oh, and then add an actual exercise regimen of 30-60 minutes a day. Walk, run, hike, bike, dance, have sex. SOMETHING. Just MOVE IT PEOPLE!
I always ask patients about their exercise regimens, because it is so integral to their health. I have patients that tell me “I run after my kids all day” or “I have to walk a lot at work”. Guess what? That’s called being alive.
Unless your child toddles like FloJo covers 100 yards on the track, you’re just living. Or perhaps you’re chasing your child for 30 minutes straight with a heart rate elevated to 120 beats per minute? Unless you’re a Zumba instructor or an Olympic swimmer, you likely need more exercise, not only to maintain a healthy weight, but to maintain a healthy mental state, to fight infection, to ward off blood clots, this list goes on. Not exercising is the most dangerous thing we can do to our bodies, aside from smoking perhaps.
We used to cover vast acres searching for food. Now we sit all day and eat too much. We used to toil in the fields, cultivating crops, now we sit in our cars angry that the drive-thru line consumes 6 minutes of our day instead of the expected two. We’ve stopped moving.
Doing something everyday is the best thing to do, better than taking medicines and supplements. I believe that if you keep on moving, your cells are active so your immunity is very high.
I totally agree! There are actually studies that show exercise increases the white blood cells (those cells that fight infection/disease) in your blood stream! It normalizes the chemistry that makes you feel good/happy; improves sleep—and good sleep is critical to fighting off disease (and for me, not being seriously irritable)
Yeah, I walk around campus quite a bit but I feel that it is not enough and I find myself looking out for shortcuts. Partly because I have a hard time walking around quite a bit and the other part would be because it’s summer and the heat is murder for me.
Yeah its tough in the summer heat! There are tons of things you can do to move indoors as well. Stay tuned for more on exercise. things you can do indoors/seated/on planes etc!
Awesome because coming up soon, I might have a few good months before the weather gets insane in the other extreme here in Colorado.
